“Marshmallow Skye” is the second part of the “The Chocolate Box Grils” series. After reading the first part, that is “Cherry Crush” I had very nice memories and I still remember it warmly. That’s why I didn’t hesitate for long when I was offered to review the second part of the series.

Cathy Cassidy created a story about five sisters living in the Tanglewood guesthouse. In the previous part, the main character was Cherry, who moved to Kitnor with her father and there she started a new life with her new family. The first part of the story was about finding oneself in a new situation and finding one’s place in an increasingly common creation nowadays, that is a patchwork family.

The plot of the book

The time has come for another sister to cast her vote. This time Skye Tanberry will tell us about her everyday life. Skye and her twin sister Summer will soon turn thirteen. The girls are entering into a “more serious teenage adolescence”, that’s what I will call it. The plot begins when Paddy (Skye’s stepfather, Summer, Coco and Honey) finds a chest with old dresses in the attic. It turns out that things belonged to Clara, a woman who lived in Tanglewood almost a hundred years earlier.

“In front of my eyes stands a boy with blue eyes, in a red scarf and a beautiful tan, holding my hand, and my heart starts beating faster. I immediately ward off my thoughts about him.
– It’s not “my” Clara. I defend myself. – Besides, you’re freaking out with that shit. She is… …our ancestor. She’s part of a family story, and very sad. She must have been madly in love with that Roma, if she risked everything for him.
– And he let her down, Summer points out. – A typical guy.”

Skye loves history. You can even see it in her dressing style because there are a lot of vintage clothes in her closet. That’s why she felt so strongly about Clara who lived so many years ago. The story of the woman took such a hold of the girl that she cast a shadow over her everyday life. Something in Skye’s life is beginning to change. She feels more and more often that she’s left in the shadow of her twin, Summer. In addition, her best friend is starting to move away from her and she seems to be obsessed with boys and will do anything to survive her first kiss soon. Will Skye manage to find her own identity? And will she be able to solve the mystery of Clara’s past?

Cathy Cassidy has created a really sweet story. And I don’t just mean that Paddy and the girls’ mother run an increasingly prosperous chocolate business. I like the fact that even though the author presents teenage problems, she doesn’t do it in such a stupid way. Cathy Cassidy touches upon the problems of fitting into a new situation or, as now, in the words of Skye, seeking her own identity, separate from that of her twin. Underneath this sweet story you can find serious problems, and what’s more, Cassidy leads the narrative in such a way that she doesn’t shake her head with pity.

I will now move on to an important part of the series, which is a reference to sweetness. In both volumes it is chocolate, and through the content there is packing truffles and sending them to customers. The girls help in the workshop, which I personally enjoyed very much. Chocolate chocolate, but each of the girls has its own favourite sweets. Cherry loved cherries and Skye fell in love with the taste of foams and righteous marshmallows. I’m curious what sweets appeal most to the other sisters. All in all, I am probably most curious about Honey’s story as she is the most difficult and rebellious one in Tanglewood camp.

Summary

To sum up, “Marshmallow Skye” is a wise and sweet story about growing up in general. I really liked Skye and it’s her quest to become an individual. If you have a free evening or two, I recommend it. With this novel, you just relax!
