The Laws of Human Nature – Robert Greene

Robert Greene, a world authority on strategy, power and manipulation, as well as the author of books considered to be classics of the subject and hosted on the lists of world bestsellers of the “New York Times”, has created another work worth reading, entitled “The New York Times”. He created another work worth reading, “The Laws of Human Nature”. The main aim of this guide is to teach the reader how to become an observer of people around us, how to interpret their behaviour and deal with toxic people.

There are many different people appearing in our lives, unfortunately some of these meetings do not give us pleasure, but even make our life difficult and unpleasant. Unfortunately, such individuals are also in our immediate environment – they may be our co-workers, boss, friends or even acquaintances. They are so-called toxic people, and what particularly unites them is the perfect ability to play on our emotions. We often don’t even realize this because they do it in an extremely skillful way and only after some time do we realize that we have been abused or manipulated.

What’s inside the book?

Most people are inherently trusting and gullible, assuming that the other person is positive about us and wants our good. On the other hand, it can happen that we are the destructive person and we don’t really know how to control this side of our character, we don’t understand why we behave like this and not differently. At some point in our lives, we may be led to reflect that we want to finally control it. The key to understanding such behaviour will be to understand the roots of human behaviour, to look inside ourselves, to find the emotions that guide our behaviour and try to interpret them.

A valuable signpost on the path of cognition will be the book “The Laws of Human Nature”, it is a set of codes with the help of which we will be able to decipher human behaviour, both ordinary, unusual and destructive. The book consists of eighteen chapters that refer to specific aspects or laws of human nature. In the individual chapters, the author describes, among other things, how to master one’s emotional self, how to transform love into empathy (that is, four examples of narcissistic personalities), then shows us how to see what is hidden behind the masks of others, he also talks about how to skilfully observe others and how to evaluate their characters. Later in the book, Greene talks about ways to soften the resistance of others, about standing face to face with one’s own dark side, and stresses that it is worth learning about one’s limitations. In one chapter he says that it is always worthwhile to act with a sense of purpose, in another chapter he says that we should resist negative group pressure, or further on, so that we can see the hostility behind a friendly facade.

It is also worth adding that individual chapters are very interestingly constructed, each of them contains a description of a known person, so as to show us a given law in a more illustrative way, and presents guidelines on how to act when we are exposed to it. At the end of individual chapters we also get advice from the author, which indicates how to transform a given force of nature into something positive, how to free oneself from its destructive action (of course, when this force is really bad). In addition, the book is designed so that we can learn all aspects of human behaviour and the main reasons for it. Reading the “Laws of Human Nature” will contribute to changing our perception of other people and dealing with them better, more appropriately. On the other hand, we will also start to look at ourselves in a different way. You are probably wondering now how this is possible, I already explain:

First of all, the Laws will begin to turn you into a calmer and more strategically minded observer of other people, helping you to free yourself from the emotional dramas that you experience unnecessarily.
Secondly, the Laws will make you a master of interpreting other people’s constant signals, giving you much greater opportunities to judge their character.
Thirdly, the Laws will enable you to recognize and guide people with toxic personality types that can cause permanent emotional damage and which you are sure to meet on your way.
Fourthly, with the help of the Laws, you will learn about the real mechanisms of motivating and influencing others, and thus make your life much easier.
Fifthly, the Laws will make you aware of how deeply the forces of human nature function within you, so that you can change negative patterns of your own behaviour.
Sixth, the Laws will turn you into someone more empathic, who creates a stronger and more satisfying relationship with the people around you.
And lastly, the Laws will change your perceptions of your own potential, so that you will understand that there is a higher, perfect self within you that you want to reach.

Thanks to reading the book, I started to look at the people around me in a different way, I try to interpret their behaviour in order to discover what they are hiding inside and what their hidden goals are. It seems to me that I also behave a little differently, I realized that some of my behaviors were not entirely good and I try to change them slowly.
