Frankly speaking, when I received the proposal of the “The Whisper Man” review, my head was taken over by the two extremes of thought. The first one is a great book! So many great reviews! On the other hand, maybe another overrated position that simply has good publicity. Nothing, I decided to take a chance, driven by a hunch. I received the book itself with an interesting gift from the Muza publishing house – a beautifully packed box with… ear plugs, until I smiled under my nose, seeing such an interesting little thing. I thought it was probably so that I wouldn’t hear any whispers. The setting, as you can see, was thoughtful (again, somewhere in the back of my head a thought appeared – good marketing, but what’s inside). Let me put it this way: while reading “The Whisper Man”, I was very happy that I don’t have children, otherwise I couldn’t finish my reading. The book was so scary, it worked on my imagination that at first my eyes were literally coming out of my orbit when I read it, how can you write such scary scenes! Luckily, after such a ravishing beginning, the author gives us a moment’s rest, but only for a moment! When I thought the worst was already behind me, Alex North attacked again and again I had to hold on to the chair not to fall. In one sentence, a book full of emotions and twists and turns. But maybe, instead of writing so vaguely, I’ll tell you what this position is about.
Tom Kennedy is a single father. Some time ago, his wife suddenly died and now he’s raising his son by himself. It’s a huge challenge for him, it’s very hard for him to have a relationship with his child, because the boy is kind of withdrawn and locked in his world, which he doesn’t really want to let anybody in. At some point Tom comes up with the idea that maybe a change of environment will help them cope with the trauma and in the new place they will manage to start all over again. Their choice falls on the small town of Featherbank, where they move into an abandoned house. Unfortunately, when they moved there, they did not know the dark past of the place. It soon turns out that twenty years ago in this small town there was a serial killer who kidnapped and murdered five-year-old boys. The press baptized him with a Whisperer, as one of his hallmarks was that he whispered under the windows of his victims. Unfortunately, the nightmare from years ago is back! Another child dies, after questioning the boy’s parents, the police see many similarities to the Whisperer’s case. Do we have a follower? Or maybe the wrong man is in prison? The police do not want to spread panic among the parents for the time being, but the case is getting a huge priority. Will the boy be rescued or will there be more victims? And above all! Who’s behind this!? You’ll find the answers to this question and many others by reading “The Whisper Man”.
Once again, I will emphasize that the book is very scary and poignant, and the poem that the children were telling each other about, gave me the creeps:
“Repeat the rhyme,” she said. “I don’t feel like it.
– Give it to me!
– “If you don’t close the door in time, someone will whisper in the evening.”
– And the rest?
He closed his eyes.
– “If you go outside alone, you’ll meet the bad guy there.””
– Come on.
The girl was talking quieter.
– “If you tilt the window a little, you’ll hear a knock on the window before dark.”
– – I?
She whispered the last word. It seemed like just a gentle breeze. Jake swallowed his saliva. He didn’t want to finish the poem, but he forced himself.
– “If you’re alone and you’re not feeling well, Mr. Whisperer will visit you – he’ll whisper quietly like a girl.”
The characters in “The Whisper Man” were very well created, I really liked the main character and his friend. These are strongly outlined personalities that you can meet and like. Also Tom’s son, despite being closed in, is presented as a very resolute and clever boy. He realizes that he is a difficult child and tries to help his father get closer.
To sum up, I will say this: the book marketing is good, but the novel REVELATIVE. I think that every thriller fan should read it and it will remain in his memory for a long time.
